Savor the Moment

We all need to slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the small moments of our lives. Otherwise, they simply pass us by in a numbing flood of color, noise, and sensation, and are too easily forgotten.

One of my favorite poets, Robert Frost, wrote a poem capturing a moment when someone stopped and simply existed, marveling at the slow, quiet beauty of snow in the forest. Note how the entire poem focuses on that brief, lovely moment, ending with a return of the pressures of life.

“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”

by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

The pressures of life will always crowd upon us. But if we make a conscious effort to pause and truly experience life, even in its briefest moments, we can find peace and joy to carry us through the hustle and bustle of all the other times.

One way to do this is to make time to serve others. Light the World is a service initiative designed to bless the lives of people around the world.

Here’s a slightly haphazard video on savoring the moment. I hope it makes you smile.
